NADIA SPARROW

Flute

From an early age, Nadia Sparrow distinguished herself in the Canadian musical landscape, notably by winning several awards and competitions including the Canadian Music Competition, the CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award and multiple prizes in the Kiwanis Music Festival. She is also a recipient of the Calgary Kiwanis Festival Rose Bowl and Rose Bowl Scholarship as well as the Austrian Mozart Society Prize. In 2020 she was a finalist of the concerto competition of the University of Montreal Orchestra and was invited to the flute programs of Domaine Forget International Academy and Orford Music.

 

A graduate of the Mount Royal Academy of Music in Calgary, Alberta, Nadia has had the privilege to study with several renowned artists including Peter Lloyd, Patrick Gallois, Jeannie Baxtresser, Susan Hoeppner, and Jim Walker. During her time in Calgary, Nadia attended the Banff Center Masterclasses, performed as a soloist and substitue flutist with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and founded several chamber ensembles.

 

Nadia holds a Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Calgary, as well as a Bachelor of Music Education and a Masters of Music Performance from McGill University under the direction of Timothy Hutchins. From 2019-2021 she completed two DESS (diplomas in specialized graduate studies) in Performance and Orchestral Repertoire at the University of Montreal under the tutelage of Denis Bluteau where she further refined her skills as a flutist and orchestral musician.

 

In addition to her work as a flutist, Nadia is an active music instructor, conductor and military musician. Since 2004 she has been regularly invited to teach flute clinics at various institutions. She has taught music and band classes at several schools including Royal Vale and Lower Canada College and instructed for the Canadian Forces School of Music since 2020.

 

From 2008 to 2011 she performed with the Band of the Ceremonial Guard in Ottawa, Ontario where she was a member of the piccolo section. In 2011 she had the privilege directing the ensemble as the Assistant Band Sergeant Major and conducted several important parades and concerts including the Fourth of July Celebrations at the US Embassy and multiple Changing of the Guard Ceremonies on Parliament Hill. She performed flute and piccolo with La Musique de Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal from 2008-2015 and is currently a Warrant Officer in the Band of 438 Tactical Helicopter Squadron of the Royal Canadian Airforce in St Hubert, QC.
